The Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity has proudly announced that advertising veteran Jacques Séguéla will be the recipient of this year’s prestigious Lion of St Mark award. This accolade celebrates Séguéla’s extraordinary career, spanning over 60 years, during which he has consistently delivered iconic work for some of the world’s most renowned brands, including Air France, Apple, Carrefour, Citroën, Louis Vuitton, and Microsoft. His portfolio also boasts numerous successful political campaigns and best-selling books on advertising.

Séguéla’s journey in advertising began at the age of 25, though his initial career path was vastly different. As a Doctor of Pharmacy, Séguéla soon realized that his true calling lay elsewhere. He then embarked on a groundbreaking round-the-world trip in a French car, which inspired his first book, “The Earth in the Round,” selling 150,000 copies. His transition to journalism was brief, as he soon co-founded the agency Roux Séguéla with Bernard Roux.

The agency’s first notable project featured French President Pompidou with a Mercury engine in the bay of St. Tropez, under the headline “Grab the Express and take off.” This success set the stage for further achievements as Alain Cayzac and Jean-Michel Goudard joined the team, leading to the formation of RSCG, which later evolved into Euro RSCG.

Among Séguéla’s remarkable achievements is his work for Carrefour with the “Produits Libres” campaign and for Citroën, where he orchestrated the daring feat of sending a Citroën AX down the Great Wall of China. He also made a bold statement by naming a Citroën model after Picasso, leading to mixed reactions from the public and the art world.

Séguéla’s impact extends to the political arena, where he masterminded the campaigns of former French President François Mitterrand. His famous 1981 slogan, “La Force Tranquille,” became a significant part of French history, a feat he repeated with the “Génération Mitterrand” campaign seven years later. Over his career, he has led 15 victorious political campaigns, showcasing his passion and prowess in political communication.

Commenting on being awarded the Lion of St Mark, Séguéla said: “After 60 years of festivals, I have seen this industry evolve with every decade, but one thing has never changed: advertising is, has been, and always will be about having an idea. I have had the great honour of working my whole life not to sell products, but to make brands eternal and I love it. I am incredibly moved to be recognized with this iconic award and I share it with all my fellow creatives who stand behind their ideas, choose optimism and give brands the only thing that will keep them alive – a soul.”

Jacques Séguéla will be honoured with the Lion of St Mark at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. He will also speak on stage in the Lion of St Mark seminar, where he will recite tales and lessons learnt over his illustrious career, taking place on Friday 21 June. McDonald’s Philippines has launched ‘Ride the Arches’, a pedal-powered movement that turns McDonald’s restaurants into cycling refueling stations.

The movement began after McDonald’s noticed that more and more of its 700+ stores in the Philippines were becoming the stopover of choice for cyclists, and began to invest in Bike & Dine infrastructure in 2021 – a McDonald’s Philippines innovation. Bike & Dine facilities include bike repair and e-bike charging stations, integrated bike racks and dining ledges and bicycle-safe ‘Ride-Thrus’. In a country where there are now four bicycle owners for every car owner, these facilities help to address a shortage of bike-friendly infrastructure: it can be difficult for cyclists to find safe places to take breaks, charge e-bikes and make minor repairs.

McDonald’s then challenged Leo Burnett Manila to get the nation cycling and turn McDonald’s restaurants into must-visit stops on any biking journey. With stores located in Tagaytay, which has views of Taal Volcano, a geologic wonder located within Lake Taal; the island of Boracay, famous for its pristine white-sand beaches; and Intramuros, a historic walled city in Manila, Leo Burnett Manila launched ‘Ride the Arches’ – a program incentivizing cyclists to discover some of the most scenic McDonald’s restaurants in the world, especially those with Bike & Dine facilities.

Kenneth S. Yang, CEO and President of McDonald’s Philippines, explains: “McDonald’s launched Bike & Dine facilities during the pandemic after seeing a surge in bike usage across the country. We saw an opportunity to improve the customer experience for our two-wheeled customers, and be an advocate for sustainable mobility—encouraging more customers to ride.”

Raoul Panes, Chief Creative Officer, Leo Burnett Group Manila and Publicis Groupe Philippines, adds: “We loved the idea of using McDonald’s scale, infrastructure and operations to support a vast community of bike enthusiasts, adding value with rewards, and creating an always-growing network of routes that lead across our stunning country. By incentivising cyclists to ‘Ride the Arches’, McDonald’s has become the gateway to discovering some of the most beautiful places in the Philippines.”

To kick off ‘Ride the Arches’, McDonald’s challenged cycling groups nationwide to create routes that loop from arch to arch, with McDonald’s as the start and end point. It also recruited cycling influencers to create and share their favorite routes, sharing these routes on popular cycling apps like Strava or Komoot.

Next, McDonald’s hosted a series of community bike rides called #TourDeMcDo. Fuelling these rides are free meals, special cyclist meals, and merchandise for those who share the best photos or ride the most kilometers.

With over 100 routes and over 51,000 kilometres pedalled so far, ‘Ride the Arches’ will continue to work with cycling groups in cities with McDonald’s Bike & Dine facilities in 2024, organizing and sponsoring rides and promoting cycling safety. Events are planned for World Bike Day (3 June) and National Bicycle Month (November), positioning McDonald’s restaurants as essential refueling stations for biking communities – a place to rest, enjoy bike repair services and their McDonald’s favorites.

Corona’s unique campaign around stunning sunset views is set to capture every traveller’s heart. Conceptualized in partnership with Digitas India, part of Publicis Groupe India, the campaign enables luxury travellers to check out the sunset rating of iconic hotels across the country on CRED Escapes, a luxury travel platform for India’s 1%.

With nearly 90% of people in cities spending their time indoors, the allure of sun tourism has been on the rise. Recognizing this trend, Corona India set out to create a unique solution—a sunset visual quality rating system akin to a Michelin Star for restaurants. This innovative approach guarantees travellers the opportunity to witness nature’s wonder with certainty, transforming fleeting moments into cherished memories.

A team of weather experts and data analysts created a new system to rate how beautiful sunsets are from a hotel room. They used 43 years of weather data from ECMWF and NASA. The system looks at data like location, wind speed, air quality, and clouds to give a sunset a score from 1 to 5.

Samsung, in collaboration with Cheil India, has introduced a unique promotional experience, the ‘Not So Silent Library,’ at the Jaipur Literature Festival—one of the premier literary gatherings globally. Aditya Babbar, vice president and head of product and marketing at Samsung, expressed pride in the association with the Jaipur Literature Festival. “Samsung is renowned for its innovation and commitment to making technology accessible. Spanning 75 episodes, this series is a comprehensive portrayal of the myriad facets of colonialism and the relentless quest for ‘Swaraj’ or self-rule. Shri Thakur emphasized the series’ role in recontextualizing historical narratives that were previously shaped by colonial interests, stating, “These are the wars which got lost somewhere in the pages of history.”

“Sardar: The Game Changer” is another gem in this cultural renaissance, celebrating the life and legacy of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, a pivotal figure in India’s independence movement and the unification of the nation. This 52-episode series commemorates the visionary leadership and strategic acumen of Patel, affectionately known as the ‘Iron Man of India’.

I aimed to revive appreciation for unique creations and reconnect people with earthy sensibilities. Despite initial hurdles, the Sante quickly gained momentum, necessitating careful planning to find suitable venues. Bangalore’s supportive community has been instrumental in our success. My team takes care and plans everything meticulously; their enthusiasm has helped create memorable events, fostering a vibrant creative ecosystem in the city.

What initially inspired you to create Sunday Soul Sante, and how has your background in English literature and teaching influenced the ethos and content of the event?

My love for art, craft and design is what inspired me to start Sunday Soul Sante.  I wanted everyone to see that Indian art, craft and design are comparable to anywhere in the world. .

The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have been the gold standard for technical education in India for decades. Established post-independence, these institutions were envisioned to lead India’s technological revolution. Over the years, while the institutes have produced numerous stalwarts in the field of engineering and technology, the journey of their female students and alumni has been particularly noteworthy. In the early years, female students at IITs were a rarity. The societal norms of the time, coupled with the challenges of pursuing a demanding curriculum, made their journey an uphill task. However, these challenges only served to steel their resolve, and the few women who entered the hallowed halls of IITs went on to set benchmarks for excellence.

A Shift in the Landscape: The Changing Gender Ratios

The landscape of IITs has witnessed a significant transformation over the past few years, especially concerning the representation of female students. A report from August 20, 2022, highlighted that four years after the introduction of the supernumerary female quota in IITs, almost every campus has achieved the 20% female student representation in the 2021-22 batch. This marked progress is evident in the numbers: while 100 women joined IIT Bombay in 2017, the figure rose to 271 by 2021. Similarly, IIT Delhi saw its female student intake grow from 90 in 2017 to 246 in 2021. The total number of female students across all IITs has almost tripled from 995 in 2017 to 2,990 in 2021.

Anu Meena

An alumnus of IIT Delhi, Anu Meena founded Agrowave in 2017. Her venture aims to revolutionize the agricultural sector by optimizing the supply chain. In a dazzling display of multicultural splendour, the Kebaya Heritage Design Competition, hosted by the International Conference on World Cultures, was launched amidst a grand gathering at the Kuala Lumpur Craft Complex. Women of diverse ethnicities, adorned in their exquisite kebaya attires, elevated the event’s glamour quotient.

The event was inaugurated by Khairul Firdaus Akbar Khan, the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, and witnessed the attendance of numerous dignitaries, including designers, celebrities, diplomats, and government officials. In his address, Khairul emphasised the importance of recognising and preserving the rich cultural tapestry of Malaysia, noting that the competition enhances the national market’s appeal in the realms of tourism, arts, and culture.

The launch event was punctuated by captivating performances such as a traditional Malay dance by the Sekolah Seni Malaysia students, and a kebaya fashion show by reigning beauty queens from across Malaysia. The event elegantly married heritage with modern fashion aesthetics.

Initiated on June 15, the Kebaya Heritage Design Competition has so far witnessed participation from across Southeast Asia, with about 100 entries from Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Brunei, and the Philippines. The competition, which continues until July 30, will then transition into a stringent selection process, with judges whittling down the entries to 50 semi-finalists. These participants must produce a prototype kebaya by August 30 and provide a detailed presentation on their design’s cultural significance.

The competition will culminate in a grand gala dinner on September 9, where a panel of judges from the five participating countries will select 25 finalists. These finalists will have the opportunity to showcase their designs in a fashion show. Of these, three will be declared winners and have their designs auctioned off for charity, to support local designers.

The grand prize winner will receive US$5,000, while the second and third prize winners will receive US$3,000 and US$2,000, respectively. According to ICWC president Azmi Mustapha, the competition is held to support the recognition of kebaya as a tangible cultural heritage in Unesco, showcasing to the world that the kebaya is here to stay. He also expressed hopes of sending the winner to Cannes, France, for a fashion show.

The event saw the participation of ICWC 2023’s Kebaya ambassador, Wanna Ali, head judge Juita Jalil, and competition coordinator Asfarena Samion Mon. Asfarena expressed hopes of reaching the target of 500 entries before the end of July, emphasizing the kebaya as a symbol of tradition and heritage across the ASEAN region.

Juita Jalil encouraged competitors to present designs steeped in culture and tradition, yet embodying originality and innovation. She affirmed that the beauty of the women in their kebayas is a testament to the timelessness of this traditional attire.

Scooter, a Chinese Crested dog with a distinctive shock-headed mohawk-like hair and an ever-dangling tongue, has been crowned the world’s ugliest dog after a captivating journey from being destined for euthanasia to finding a loving home. 

Rescued at the age of seven by Linda Elmquist, Scooter’s life took a heartwarming turn after he was initially brought to an animal control center in Arizona for euthanasia by a breeder. Elmquist, instantly taken by Scooter, felt compelled to adopt him, stating it was ‘love at first sight.’

Generation Z, those born between 1997 and 2012, have frequently been branded as lazy, disinterested, and rigid, a negative stereotype that a recent global report argues is far from the truth. This demographic, which will represent 27% of the global workforce by 2025, is often criticized for a perceived lack of professional qualities and a preoccupation with unrealistic desires that supposedly make them unfit for the working world. 

However, as the latest report from BCW, a premier integrated communications agency, highlights, these young individuals are anything but lacking in ambition and focus. BCW’s comprehensive research, involving members from different generations around the globe, has shed light on the defining values of Generation Z, turning preconceived notions on their head. 

Conducted through a series of interviews with diverse groups including millennials, Generation X, baby boomers, and members of the silent generation, the study reveals that most people are social creatures, inherently wired to cooperate and avoid conflict, regardless of their generation. These individuals adhere to values such as benevolence, universalism, and security, although disparities between countries and generations are evident. 

Contrary to popular belief, Generation Z members are more ambitious and driven than they’re given credit for. They value power, success, and hedonism. In fact, 44% of respondents in this age group express the importance of achieving success and gaining recognition for their efforts, compared to only 37% of millennials and a mere 13% of baby boomers. 

This generational gap in values can, in part, be attributed to the influential role of social media in young people’s lives. In societies profoundly digitized, the success stories of peers are constantly broadcasted on social platforms, allowing for a glimpse into the highlights of others’ lives. As a result, it’s hardly surprising that younger generations are so focused on realizing and being seen to realize, their highest potential.

But ambition does not translate into an imbalanced life for Generation Z. They yearn for a better balance between their professional and personal lives, seeking jobs that stimulate them and bring them pleasure. Forty-three percent of young people surveyed attach significance to engaging in activities that bring them joy, something organizations should consider if they wish to remain appealing to this generation. 

These revelations give a new perspective on Generation Z, shifting the narrative from disinterested youths to ambitious, success-driven individuals. This report underscores the importance of shedding biases and understanding Generation Z on their own terms, an approach crucial to fostering harmonious generational coexistence in an evolving world.
